The 2011 ASP tour is done and dusted. Ke11y was crowned…twice. John John proved what we already knew-that he’s one of, if not the best surfer on the North Shore, and the surf world has returned their focus to Dane’s Blog and other less organized pursuits.

For those of you that are suffering withdrawal from the marathon webcasts of the World Tour, relief has finally arrived in the form of the 2012 Volcom Pipe Pro.

Day 1 saw absolute dredgers at the famed stretch of reef and standout performances from Wardo and the usual cadre of Pipe Heavy hitters including a helmeted Liam McNamara showing his true experience at 40 plus years of age and a New York’s own Balaram Stack. Not to mention that the webcast is packed with legends like Mark Healey, that provide actual commentary on surfing Pipe rather than the usual parade of industry insiders that gush over floaters and fly-away airs.

Heat of the year?

Jon Jon was a revelation for the whole Hawaii leg/whole year, mimicking Gavin Beschen’s (See Computer Body) relaxed style underneath the lip of second reef bombs, while Slater did the typical Slater thing. Comboed in the dying minutes, grabs an inside one under his opponent’s priority and takes the win, while Jon Jon takes the Triple Crown.

With his relevance more apparent than ever, wasting our breath trying to figure out if he’s going to stay on tour or “retire” is pointless. For one, when has Robert Kelly Slater ever listened to anyone else (besides his close circle of confidants)? and secondly, does it even matter.

Stay or Go. Retire or Compete. Waimea or Sebastien. It doesn’t matter for Ke11y or his legacy. He’s done it all and smoked the 3rd 4th generation of surfers meant to rip the title from the Floridian’s grasp.

The only question that he’s left unanswered is will anyone ever come close to what he’s achieved?
